Abelson, Prout and her family talked over lunch after the lecture. The two met at a lecture Prout gave at Yale University in October 2016. Abelson had been investigating sexual assault and misconduct at New England prep schools. One person who came into her life willing to listen, Prout said, was Jenn Abelson, an investigative reporter on the Boston Globe’s Spotlight Team. “We have the right to speak out, share our stories, be respected and be heard.” “I wanted to help show other survivors that we can show strength through this process and not have that be discounted against our trauma,” Prout said. Prout wanted to show the world her humanity. We are the nameless, faceless victims, or alleged victims, or accusers.” And we as the victims are protected under anonymity, but that can be a double-edged sword. It was because too often, the perpetrators are given these long, lauded descriptions of who they are, what they have to lose, all of their accomplishments. “Part of the reason I wanted to write the book in the first place was part of the reason I came out with my name and face on the 'Today' show. “I realized the whole story and after-effect of what this crime did to me and my family was not out there,” Prout said. Part of owning her experience was writing her book, titled “I Have the Right to.” She appeared on the "Today" show and said she felt liberated to own her experience and dedicate herself to supporting others who have experienced similar trauma. ![]() In late 2016, Prout decided she no longer wanted to be the anonymous victim of sexual assault in the St. His appeal for a new trial was denied in April 2017. He was sentenced to one year in prison and five years of probation. Labrie also was convicted of endangering a child, a misdemeanor, and using a computer to lure a minor, a felony that required him to register as a sex offender. Labrie said his encounter with Prout was consensual and did not involve intercourse.Īccording to media reports, the jury did not believe Labrie's statement that he and Prout didn't have intercourse and didn't believe Prout's allegation that the intercourse was against her will. Prosecutors alleged Labrie raped Prout as part of a school ritual known as the "Senior Salute," in which seniors try to have sex with younger students. He was acquitted of those and convicted of three charges of misdemeanor statutory rape because Prout was younger than the legal age of consent. The student she accused, Owen Labrie, faced three charges of felony aggravated assault. “The way my friends came to me respectfully and in my own time was really helpful.” “When I came back to school, my friends made sure to tell me, ‘Whenever you’re ready to talk about this, we are here for you, but we don’t want to bring it up without your permission,’ ” Prout said. When the stress and bullying from the 2014 assault became too much, she returned to Collier County and re-enrolled at the Community School.
